It features the voice of rapper 50 Cent on the chorus. The song was first played on U.S. radio in 2005 and due to strong airplay, it charted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #75, before the first official single, "Be Without You" was released from The Breakthrough.
On 18 December 2006, one year after the song's initial airplay, the song was released in the UK as the lead single from her "best of" album Reflections (A Retrospective).[1][2] "MJB Da MVP" was added to the playlist of UK radio station BBC Radio 1 on November 22, while the video for the single, a montage video, was released later that week.[3]
The Cool & Dre produced track is a cover version of "Hate It or Love It", a single by performed by The Game featuring 50 Cent. In the new vocal part, Mary J. relates the ups and downs of her career and expresses thanks to Dr. Dre and The Game for letting her work on a track that is "hot!"
The single, despite there not being any promotion from Blige herself, managed to chart at #33 upon its release in the UK. "MJB Da MVP" became Blige's twenty-seventh top 40 hit in the UK.
On November 14, 2010, an unofficial video for the song was released on YouTube[4] by D2theA Productions. The video was made as a tribute to Mary's career, and through various images, captures exactly what Mary expresses in her lyrics to the song. Video creator Darryl Anthony said in regards to the concept for the video, "I had the idea for this video after listening to the song and realizing that this is the best breakdown of Mary's life". Darryl has reached out to Mary on Twitter in hopes that she responds back to the video.
The Game provided a new verse for the official remix of "MJB Da MVP", this remix is also the second official remix to The Game's song "Hate It or Love It".
In the song, Mary describes her road to a successful career. She mentions her start in 1991-1992, her albums What's the 411?, My Life (where she states "her life wasn't right"), Share My World, Mary, No More Drama and her sadness by the death of her very close friend, R&B singer Aaliyah.[5]
